Shade bamboo rufa - grows well in full sun
The umbrella bamboo Fargesia rufa is a splendid specimen! The waxy bamboo fargesia attracts every eye. The eye rests with pleasure on its graceful culms and many long, narrow and crisp green leaves that taper off at the front. Bamboo needs good, nutrient-rich garden soil and sufficient water. As soon as the soil dries out, water a little. It forms clumps, its shoots emerge from the thick base root; no root or rhizome barrier is necessary!
Ornamental plant and fast-growing timber
The vigorous growing umbrella bamboo, with slightly overhanging branches, always grows in spring and autumn! If you want to buy Fargesia bamboo, calculate 4 - 5 plants per running metre. Its culms are tender at first and later become thick and strong. The bamboo Fargesia rufus tolerates sun and partial shade well. In Asia, its elastic culms are a popular building material. Bamboo Fargesia Rufa can be pruned well. It comes into its own at ponds and streamsides in an Asian garden and is also popular as a bamboo hedge. The hedge bamboo is always a grateful companion, whether as a garden border, solitary (single) or excellent, dense privacy screen. It grows 2 to 3 metres tall outdoors. It is ideal as an impressive pot plant on the patio, in the conservatory or as a very effective screen for the balcony, but then only grows to about 1.5 metres high.
Evergreen bamboo is very hardy
If you buy a Fargesia bamboo, it will survive the winter well; it is frost-hardy, even - 16 to - 24 degrees. However, a little mulch on the roots is good for it and it is better to avoid icy winds. If bamboo grows in a pot, wrap it up to protect the roots from frost. Drainage (watering) can be offered to the wispy umbrella bamboo in the garden twice a year (March, July); it needs a lot of nutrients. The ornamental bamboo should be planted in a large pot and fertilised once a month. Sufficient watering is important, but avoid waterlogging (the pot needs drainage!). Fargesia bamboo can be planted all year round. For a bamboo hedge you need 4 to 5 plants per running metre.
