Redflowered Günsel, the herb with an authentic touch
In phytotherapy, günsel lost its importance. Although Ajuga reptans, as the herb is scientifically known, was mentioned in the 12th century in the writings of Hildegard von Bingen, it is not a recognised medicinal plant. In our latitudes, it grows in sparse woods and meadows. Atropurpurea captivates with its predominantly reddish leaves and thus stands out visually from other herbs. Because of its high ornamental value at flowering time, Günsel is now becoming increasingly popular in gardens and parks.
Description of red-leaved gilly
This perennial and winter-green herb sits on a short, sturdy rhizome and forms runners that take root at the nodes. Creeping growth characterises the germplasm as a ground cover. It is excellently suited for planting as a lawn edging. Oppositely arranged, ground-covering rosettes produce dense cushions. The attractive herbaceous carpet retains its pile throughout the year. The variety Atropurpurea has reddish brown-greenish foliage. Stalked, lipped or spatulate leaves glisten on the upper sides. They are slightly notched at the edges. Square leaf stalks with a reddish-purple base rise upright up to 20cm into the air. Fluffy florets are found higher up. Red-leaved gourd has false whorls with simple bracts. Purple-blue flowers with light stripes stand in several tiers. The fascinating flowering season lasts from May to June. Long-suffering bumblebees, wild bees, butterflies and swallowtails, such as the doveclaw, arrive to pollinate the up to 1.5 cm large labiate flowers.
Suitable habitats for the creeping ginger
Red-leaved creeping günsel leaves all options open for its use in the garden. Whether sunny or shady, it makes few demands on light conditions. As far as the soil is concerned, it likes a nutrient-rich soil with balanced moisture. Island groundcovers thrive under Bäumen and other sunny locations. Otherwise you can plant this easy-care herb in any free corner. It is also possible to cultivate it in the garden with airy leaves hanging over the edge. Severe frost will not harm the plants.
Harmonious environment for the island flower
The home herb garden should not be without red flowers. In general, natural gardens provide a very harmonious refuge for the low plants. On watercourses and ponds, the wild perennial stabilises the bank zone. It is also decorative along paths or in front gardens and borders. For colourful additions to Günsel as a ground cover, we recommend Field Sand Thyme, Catmint and True Lavender
