Hibiscus - beauty all in white;
With the garden hibiscus, southern ambience moves into the outdoor area. The shrubby hibiscus with the botanical name Hibiscus syriacus originated in China, but was already cultivated in the warm climate zones of Europe. The garden hibiscus, which belongs to the mallow family, can withstand temperatures as low as -30°C and therefore has many admirers here. It is the flowers that attract attention. The high ornamental value of the shrub makes it a popular plant, especially as it makes an excellent hibiscus hedge. After the winter, the garden hibiscus takes its time, because it takes until April before the first green shoots appear. However, the flowers continue to bloom from July until well into autumn.

The summer-green shrubby hibiscus grows upright and slightly bushy up to 2.00 m tall. Its ability to be pruned, even into the old wood, allows it to be shaped in various ways. The best time to prune is in spring. Even a very short-cropped hibiscus hedge will produce a multitude of flowers in summer. Medium-sized, three-lobed leaves up to 9 cm long are coarsely seeded at the edges. Towards the end of the season they take on a yellowish hue. Stalked, five-leaved, white cup-shaped flowers reach a diameter of up to 8 cm when fully open. In the centre is the columna, a tube consisting of fused stamens and stamens. The nectar of Hibiscus syriacus attracts butterflies, honeybees, bumblebees and other wild bees. After pollination, capsule fruits with hairy seeds develop.
Planting hibiscus as a hedge
Border planting with the garden hibiscus combines privacy with fascinating flowers, either plain white or variegated with pinks, reds and blues. The hibiscus hedge can easily be kept at a width of 60 cm. It is therefore also suitable for smaller gardens. Allow 2 to 3 sprouts per running metre. A planting time in the spring is recommended for the most common plants. Pot-grown garden hibiscus grows well all year round.

The garden marshmallow is one of the sun worshippers among the ornamental shrubs. Therefore, give it a sunny to semi-shady location. Its exotic charisma is particularly suited to the Mediterranean garden. There, the shrub hibiscus shines both as a solitary plant and in a group. If desired, it will arrange itself with the space in a large box. Alternatively, the garden hibiscus can be used as an eye-catcher in modern green areas. Together with lavender and red ground cover roses, picturesque compositions are created.
