A hardy and robust plant
The scarlet field thyme is uncomplicated and provides much joy in the garden. The evergreen plant is very hardy up to temperatures of -28 °C. This fragrant ground cover loves a sunny location. It prefers to grow in a well-drained, dry soil. A sandy and humus-poor subsoil with small stones is ideal. It is really astonishing how docile this plant is. It even thrives on lean, barren soil. What's more, thyme is hardly any work at all. As a practical ground cover, it even eliminates the annoying weeding! You can remove the shoots growing sideways at will. This way the thyme plant keeps its shape. Even in dry conditions it hardly shows any signs of fatigue. It is only sensitive to waterlogging. Despite its close relationship to the chickweed, field thyme is less suitable as a herb because of its harsh aroma.
